Entiendo, pero no hablo
You understand Spanish. Then it is your turn.
The conversation reaches you, but your answer arrives slowly—or only after the moment has passed. That gap is common when listening has had hundreds of hours and speaking has had almost none.

What is happening
Recognition and retrieval are different jobs.
While listening, the speaker supplies the words and your brain connects them with meaning. While speaking, you must choose the idea, find the language, arrange it and pronounce it—all before the conversation moves on.
That does not mean you know nothing. It means the language you can recognize is not all equally available for spontaneous use yet. Short, repeated conversations give that retrieval process somewhere to develop.
“I know what that means” can arrive long before “I can say what I mean.”
A practical start
Make the first goal smaller.
01
Choose familiar territory
Talk about your day, food, a trip or a decision you already understand well. Save complex debate for later.
02
Allow simple answers
A clear sentence you can produce now is more useful than a perfect paragraph that never starts.
03
Notice what you needed
Afterward, keep the phrases and patterns that would have helped. Revisit them in a later conversation.
